DIY Super Easy Dandruff Tonic!

By 7:31 PM , , , , ,

If I don't use anything to treat my dandruff, I get really bad dandruff. Take a comb through my hair and there will be flakes all over. It will be snowing in July when I scrub my scalp.

A few times I have used Head & Shoulders, which eventually started to do nothing for it as I got older. I have also used Redken, but both these products felt so damaging to my hair. My scalp was dandruff and itch free, but my hair looked like I had been struck by lightening.

Kind of off topic here, but I love the look of dreadlocs. So much so, that I decided I wanted to get them. I ended up buying dreadloc shampoo, and if anything knows anything about dreadlocs, you have to wash them with a residue free shampoo. I started doing this before I wanted to put locs in and within a week my head was itch free yet again! The only thing is, I had to absolutely LOAD on the conditioner after I decided I didn't want locs anymore, but liked how it was treating my dandruff. My hair was so dry, that my hair stylist at the time gave me a deep conditioning treatment for 25 minutes!!

So as I'm contemplating on the site where I got the loc shampoo from whether or not to buy more for my dandruff, I seen a "dreadloc tonic" for irritated scalps. It basically looks like a tea bag, and you put the concoction into a spray bottle and let it steep.

Well, I figured, why can't I do that now? Would that work with my irritated scalp?
YES!!! And it's all natural too! And SO easy!! Such a money saver!! And smells so purdy.

Here's what you will need:

  • spray bottle
  • water
  • tea bags
  • sea salt
  • tea tree oil (it's anti-fungal)
Here's what to do:
  1. Put the tea bag into the spray bottle. Depending on how big the spray bottle is, add more for a better smell. You don't want to put too little either, unless you like the smell of tea tree oil. Peppermint is great for this, or you can experiment with other teas.
  2. Fill the spray bottle with water from the sink. Please DO NOT boil water and then add it in a plastic bottle. You wouldn't believe how many people do that. AKA me.
  3. Add in some sea salt. I like to add sea salt in for my curly hair. It gives it extra curl and it's also good for voluminous hair.
  4. Add in around 10 drops of tea tree oil into your mixture.
  5. Close the lid and shake it.
  6. Leave it for about 2 hours or overnight for the tea to steep.
Tada! That's it!
Applying it is simple: Spray your scalp after you shower. Massage scalp.

I usually don't remake the bottle every week or so. I use it up pretty much. It lasts about a month or two at room temperature, so it should be OK.
It takes about 3 washes to get rid of all dandruff.

I really don't think I'll buy another product for dandruff again.
